November 2019 Athlete of the Month - Frankie Echevarria

If you have been in a class with Frank Echevarria, you have been encouraged in one way or another. I knew from when I first met Frankie back in June that he would be a vital part of our community. He always walks in with a big smile on his face and is excited to train (no matter what the program is.) This guy is always looking to learn and practice new skills. Coming from an athletic childhood and battling through a challenging weight loss, Frankie found crossfit five years ago and has loved it from the start. He takes full advantage of having his coaches at his disposal. Whether it be asking for help with weightlifting, suggestions for gaining strict gymnastic strength or sharpening his skill in double unders after class, Frankie puts in the work every single day. As a coach, it’s rewarding getting to have a guy like Frankie in class because he is hungry to work, learn and improve at all times. It was awesome to see him battle through the workout “Grace” with the RX weight. He was little unsure how it would go but wanted to give it a shot. With the encouragement of two coaches there, he chipped away and hit all 30 reps as singles and with solid form at that. Thank you for your undying hard work and keep doing your thing Frankie! You bring a level of positivity to the gym that not many can.

Q&A
Why you started Crossfit?
At nearly 300 lbs. I didn’t feel well about my health. Doing everyday things such as going up stairs was becoming a challenge. I was desperately looking for a change and stumbled upon my friend’s box Crossfit Breed.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
Growing up all I wanted to do was to play baseball and football. Throughout my childhood I participated in various baseball travel leagues and played High School Baseball.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been a member of Crossfit Island Park for nearly six months. I have been doing Crossfit for five years.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
Crossfit Island Park is top notch! It’s a great atmosphere, just being around the athletes and coaches is what keeps me motivated to stay healthy and continue to work hard.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
My biggest challenge is learning how to work on my strengths and weaknesses. Trying to make my weaknesses my strength and build on that.

When Coach Rob announced I was Athlete of the Month, I was very surprised! Also, when Coach Rob announces there is new gear for purchase. (I like to represent my box!)

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Anything and everything (LOL) but peanut butter and chocolate are my favorite.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Go for it! Do not be intimidated everything is scale-able. Do not doubt yourself, you will enjoy it and will make new friends in your journey to be fit.

What drives you?
To better myself is what drives me. The support that my wife gives me everyday is to continue to stay healthy and reminds me how far I’ve come.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
My ultimate goal is to get strict pull-ups and build up my stamina.
