May 2020 Athlete of the Month - Gelena Alexandrovskaya

It is an honor to announce that Gelena is our May Athlete of the Month. One thing that I love about our gym is that you keep meeting amazing people who contribute so much to our community. The day I asked coaches to write down what each member does for a living next to their name instead of a score, I was blown away by the diverse careers. Gelena’s was one that stood out. “Gelena is a judge?” I said to Dr. Jeremy when I walked in the gym. I would not have guessed that; it’s pretty awesome. As you read her answers, you will understand the progress Gelena has had in the last 18 months since joining the gym. The mental growth is awesome to see because some people began training CrossFit back in 2009 and haven’t had that experience yet. I am thankful for the compliments to my program and I appreciate the trust you have in myself as well as the rest of the coaches. As I look back when Gelena joined, it didn’t take long before she dove in head first. Fitness has clearly been a priority to her as I’ve seen her in the 5:50am, 6am, 8:30am, 5pm, 6pm and weekend classes. She makes time for it. I can attest that she is a stronger runner now than when she came to us. She’s eager to improve but understands that it is a process. I’m proud to be a part of the journey and help you achieve goals. I’m definitely excited to teach the barbell movements again so keep your sights on squat snatches!

Q&A
Why did you start Crossfit?
I was getting bored of my routine at the regular gym and was losing motivation to work out. In addition, I had participated in a number of 5K races in the past few years and, even though I did relatively well for someone with no athletic background [personal best: 4th out of 108 in my age group at the time, 30-39, women; finish time: 25:15 @ 8:09 min/m; 10/29/2017; NycRuns Haunted Island 5k], I have reached a plateau and was looking to get faster.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I have no formal athletic background, but now I wish I had … in gymnastics! (for handstands,  muscle ups and TTB…wink wink).  Muscle memory is real.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been a member of Crossfit Island Park and have been doing Crossfit since December 2018.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
That’s a hard one. It is a combination of a wonderful and caring community, owners, coaches and members that keep motivating me every day and, of course, the programming that is effective, fun and scalable to everyone’s needs.

P.S. I am nothing short of impressed and forever grateful how Rob and Jeremy were able to quickly recalibrate the entire program during these difficult times to make sure CFIP members continue to get the best out of the workouts under these unprecedented circumstances.

P.P.S. It doesn’t hurt that the box is 4 minutes driving distance from me.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
Finding a balance between pushing beyond your limits and knowing when to take it easy. It is no longer a challenge, however, since I have finally embraced the concept that progress is slow and in no way linear, but I have fallen in love with the process of becoming the best version of myself and view it as an end in and of itself.  Perspective makes all the difference.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Again, a hard one, since there are so many good ones. But one of the best moments is always that feeling you get in the middle of a particularly challenging WOD when you feel you can’t go on and you dig deep within yourself to somehow find the strength to keep going and finish the workout fueled with pure adrenaline and collective suffering of others working just as hard, if not harder, around you. What a rush! :)

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Haagen Daaz coffee ice cream. I’m not willing to admit the quantities I can eat at one time and my friends have been sworn to secrecy on the subject.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
“Just do it”. Many people do not realize that you can start at any age and any level of fitness, because the program offered by CFIP is, huge thanks to the owners and coaches, is challenging, but super fun, safe and scalable to any level and transferable to virtually all areas of our lives. I am a strong believer that functional constantly varied fitness is the way to go for all, but, even more than that, CFIP’s programming, coaching, individual attention given to each member, the community and box maintenance make CFIP a perfect fit for anyone looking to join.

What drives you?
I have come to agree with those who look at fitness as a lifestyle. Crossfit has become my lifestyle, because it’s fun and sustainable way to keep me strong and healthy. It’s like having coffee in the morning. Part of my regular daily routine. I no longer need any motivation to work out, since I enjoy Crossfit as much as coffee (or, let me put it this way, I’d give up the latter for the former if I had to choose, though, thankfully, no one is asking me to).  There is a question of the day for ya…wink wink.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
I had started running in order to lose, and then maintain, my weight. Crossfit has changed that for me.  My goals have evolved from, initially, trying to become a faster runner, to increasing my strength and staying healthy. Everything else comes as an added bonus. Oh (P.S. barbell love is real).

When I started Crossfit and CFIP, a few weeks shy of turning 40, I couldn’t do half the things I’ve accomplished so far after joining CFIP (including but not limited to, rope climbing, pull ups, toes to bar and overhead squats).  I’m looking to perfect and increase reps with those skills and I’m working on those unbroken double unders, kipping skills and, maybe, just maybe, handstand pushups and muscle ups one day (whattt…a girl can dream!). One day…one day…Seriously, though, somehow, these goals have come to seem attainable.

If I had to be more specific, however, I want to be able to squat snatch at least half my weight with good form (you know, to be able to comfortably catch the barbell overhead while in a squat  and rise up with it without wobbling).

April 2020 Athlete of the Month - Doug O'Grady

I am so happy to announce that Dougie is Mr. April 2020. There have been some ups and downs with consistency but Dougie has been so committed and driven. This goes for before the quarantine and he has been all in ever since. I cannot say enough about this guy. He has the biggest smile on his face every time I see him and is excited to be at the gym every day he can. One of the best coaching memories I have is a few years ago when I helped Doug get his first bar muscle up. He was practicing for a while at open gym. He was failing one attempt after the next and couldn’t follow through. I walked in the gym and said hi and asked what he was doing. A few minutes later, I gave him some pointers and he hit a muscle up fast and smooth. It was one of the best reactions ever. I think it’s on video somewhere. Doug’s passion and drive is incredible. He joined one of the first weightlifting groups and was by far the most improved throughout the 16 weeks. It really goes to show that hard work pays off. Something very few people know is that Doug knew my cousins growing up. I learned this a couple months after he joined the gym and it has opened up just how much family means to him. His family is everything! If you talk to Doug more than 10 minutes, you’ll hear a story about his brother and his kids. Dougie has a huge heart and his such a selfless guy. I’m proud to know him and call him a friend.

Q&A
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit because the first time I saw a CrossFit gym was down in the west end of Long Beach. It was very intense looking and the people running were in such great shape. I was intrigued by it but it didn’t come into my life until later on. As soon as I committed to it, I lost about 15 lbs and gained muscle and core strength like I hadn’t seen on me since I was in my early 30’s. I also saw fast results and how fast I was as compared to other people around my age. When I got really into it and we had short runs and sprinting in the wods, I was in the middle of the pack. About a month later when I had lost the weight, I was wondering why everyone was running so slow. I said hell with this and I just took off and blew by everyone. With that being said, one day you’re on top and finishing first and then on the next day you finish dead last and almost die. Either way you leave and feel like you are a beast once you’ve recovered. CrossFit definitely humbled me when I got ahead of myself and thought I was better than I was. Which is something we all need at times.

What is your athletic background?
My background was predominantly boxing. I walked into the west end boxing gym at about 12 years old. I fell in love with it. I especially loved sparring after hitting the bags. The west end of Long Beach was not a really nice place to grow up in back then. I had to learn how to handle myself quick. In high school I wrestled a bit too. The training in both is very similar to CrossFit. All timed rounds with intense workouts that leave you completely gassed.  I didn’t really start lifting weights till I was about 41. I always excelled at body weight workouts. I’m definitely living proof that muscle has memory.

How long have you been a member of and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been a member of CFIP since June of 2017. I started doing CrossFit since around February of 2017. I dabbled in CrossFit after Hurricane Sandy and that is how I met some of the original members and coaches from CFIP. I was too busy with the volunteering and a  foundation I started to stay with it at that time. The seed was planted then and it grew when I came back to it.

What is you favorite thing about the gym?
My favorite thing about the gym is the sense of community and how everyone is helping each other. The coaches and my friends from our gym are the best and have dragged me out of some rough times. I don’t even think they knew they had helped me as much as they did. So many people inspire me in our gym and that list is big and it’s growing. Sometimes it’s just a text or a call and I get back into it and I feel good in a short time. Sometimes it’s a partner wod with certain members and we absolutely do amazing. The right people can motivate each other.  I also love the hero wods and everything that comes with them.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
The biggest challenge I overcame since joining the gym is pacing myself to not to redline early. I come out like a tank and Dr. Jeremy calls me a Junk Yard Dog! Coach Rob worked with me on many wods and one day it just clicked. All the coaches do something that helps or inspires me and then that movement or lift is done totally different. This week I was doing the gymnastics strength part of the workout and due to the repetition of doing the same thing better each week, I was doing and holding a handstand. 3 weeks before on zoom, I fell on my face every last handstand of the set!

What is you favorite moment at the gym so far?
My favorite moments of the gym were when I did a ring muscle up on my 50th birthday. My oldest son Liam, recorded it on my phone. I feel that I am setting a good example for my boys. Especially if they see me do well at the more complicated movements. My other favorite moment was when I made a last minute decision to take the 8:00 pm class last year with coach Kyle and I deadlifted 515 lbs to top the leaderboard last year. He was great at motivating me that night. I should say all the time really. Being 51 years old and being on the leaderboard in 3 events, was something I never thought I’d do. Those numbers just looked out of reach for me but because of this gym, they weren’t.

What is your favorite “cheat” food?
My favorite cheat food is milk and cookies!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
If someone is thinking about starting or is a beginner in the gym, I would and I do encourage them. When they say that it’s too hard or they don’t want to get hurt, I tell them that we modify every movement to prevent injuries and also to keep them moving well through the workouts. I tell them the changes in their body will come so rapidly and they will never get the same results in a conventional gym. I explain that it’s having a personal trainer in every class that knows your strengths and weaknesses. Coach Nikki saved my back on a workout in a class, just by observing that I was in pain holding a sandbag. The coaches are watching out for the members here and not just teaching a class.

What drives you?
What drives me is I want my kids to learn by power of example from me. That even though I’m not that young, I can be the healthiest version of myself. They play 10 sports between the 2 of them. When they come to the open and they see me doing my best and working as hard as I can, I hope that stays in their mind. 2018 open they were cheering and going nuts when Mike Hyland nailed a 307# squat clean with 10 seconds left on the clock. Seeing me on the leaderboard and doing difficult movements that other 50 something year old Dads aren’t doing. I love living a healthy clean life and even though I’m not great at everything, they see that I’m doing the best that I can. I hope to inspire and motivate them and anyone else that thinks they can’t. A man came into the gym asking coach Anita about the workouts. He said he was too old and he couldn’t do it. She pointed to me and told him “he’s 3 years older than you and he’s doing it.”She said he couldn’t believe it something like that. I was doing sets of toes to bar and I do know it was one of those workouts where I was on point. When the younger members tell me that I’m the goal for them, at 50 + years of age. When I was 37, I lost my twin brother to drugs and alcohol. I buried him on Christmas Eve. Worst day of my life honestly. In the years to come I got married had kids.  I didn’t drink, smoke or do drugs but I was killing myself with food and I was 248 lbs. I guess it how I was dealing with his death and then all the situations that kept popping up in my life. So at 41 years of age I started working out again and by the age of 48, I found myself back in a CrossFit gym. I was hooked to say the least. In the summer of 2017 I was around 176-178 lbs. So yeah being a power of example is what drives me.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
My biggest fitness goals are first to be comfortable at around 185-188 lbs. I have about 10 pounds to go! I’d like to string sets of double unders together. From boxing for so many years, I can fly at singles faster than almost anyone. I just can’t wrap my mind around the doubles. I’ll get it and I’ll be able to fly through them once I do. I’d like to learn handstand walks and to be able to string sets of ring muscle ups and bar muscle ups together too. Work on my flexibility but most of all to stay motivated and not take anything to seriously in the gym. We have fun in our gym and I know when I’m in a class, something outrageous or inappropriate could be said. Thanks for selecting me

March 2020 Athlete of the Month - Pat Duggan

Congratulations Paddy Duggan! It’s amazing how times (the pandemic) like these can bring out the best in people. It goes to show the quality of people we have in our gym community. It was so easy to choose the March Athlete of the Month (and even next month too.) I would like to thank Pat on behalf of the entire coaching staff for his character and presence inside and outside the gym. His positive mindset, excitement to learn and eagerness to offer a hand is incredible. Duggan joined the gym about 6 months after I came from Brooklyn. Keri Wisey brought him in and introduced him to CrossFit and myself. We learned quickly that we share a running background (Pat has a lot more than me) and later that we have more in common. Duggan teaches in school where kids don’t have the best upbringing and he has been able to form a trusting bond with them. That’s the kind of guy Duggan is. He always does the right thing, the right way and for the right reasons. That might be the biggest aspect of his character that I admire because I too strive to do the same. The most recent thing Pat has come to do for the gym is start a trivia night on Zoom. For the past 3 weeks, it’s been a hit! Members and coaches love the energy and the fun created by Duggan. I’m going to throw it out there, let’s continue trivia night hosted at the gym once a month when we get back to our regular schedule. It’s up to our host. Lastly, I would like to congratulate Pat and his wife Courtney as they are about to become parents. Their baby is due any day now.

Q&A

Why did you start Crossfit?
I used to coach Cross Country/Track and Field for the girls’ program at Calhoun High School in Merrick, New York. We were a really good team, but it wasn’t until my Assistant Coach, Keri Wisey (aka Koegs), came in and introduced different crossfit movements and techniques that we became a GREAT team. That season we won a Division Championship and placed top 5 in the County, which in prior years would have been a dream. This really inspired me! I have always looked up to Keri as an athlete and mentor in my life, so I called her and said that I really wanted to try Crossfit and change my fitness. The next day, I met Rob and he told me he came from a similar background in regard to running. From there, I was sold. If by the end of this I looked like Rob….then what a win that would be haha.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
My background is in running. I have been running track and field since the 3rd grade. By the 4th grade, my father would make me run 5k-10k. I would literally cry by the second mile, but he would always keep pushing me to go on. This would eventually lead to a scholarship to run for Marist College, a Division 1 Program, where I would run up to 70-100 miles a week. I was obsessed and loved it. Many people think that running is an individual sport, but when you run with a group of people and train as a team, it is far from individual. You are constantly pushing one another to get better, and there is a lot of racing techniques/tactics that are put into place to build you both mentally and physically as an athlete. For example, when the elite runners in the NYC marathon “make their move” in that pivotal race moment, this is all part of their training in group pacing--so they know exactly how to time it. Running has taught me a lot about myself that I can apply to Crossfit--like pushing it or holding back in workouts and having that mental focus to keep going even when your body wants to give up.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started in July 2016….so almost four years now.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
Everything! So, I am a teacher at a Transfer High School in New York City, where students are over-aged and under-credited. Most of my day is often spent dealing with the social/emotional side of things with many of my students, rather than the academic side. I love where I teach, but throughout my first three years there I constantly felt burnt out--I was there for my students, but not there for myself. This gym has provided me with an immense source of stress relief and is really one of the most welcoming communities that I know. Every time I show up at the door for my 7pm fitness class, John Garrity is waiting to give me a high five or Coach Kyle screams “DUGGAN” across the gym. When you’ve had a tough day professionally, it’s these little things that make you feel instantly better. I also love the overall dynamic of the 7pm class. We have members from all different backgrounds, ages, and religions (Pavlo), but we all push each other and are there for each other both inside and outside the gym. Lastly, the coaches! They make such an effort to ensure every member is treated as an individual and really push us both physically and mentally each and every day.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
My biggest challenge has been the mental game. Sometimes, I catch myself saying “I can’t” or “there is no way I can do that”. However, with the help from other members and the coaches at the gym, I have truly done things that I never thought I could do--and my mental game has changed for the better!

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
I have really enjoyed the open workouts, especially when Coach Rob made me dress up like a duck. Also, a lot of my favorite moments have occurred outside the gym--like the Christmas Party and barbeques. Whether we’re playing volleyball together (where I must say the women on our team dominate!) or the recent trivia nights where we joke around with a glass of wine or beer….It’s those moments that really make this gym experience.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Pizza….especially buffalo chicken sicilian slices from Ginos.  I start by thinking I’m only going to have two slices and the next thing I know I have devoured six!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
It will be one of the best decisions you will make in your life! You will meet people who are kind and genuine, and you will be able to do things that you never thought you could do before.

What drives you?
If you asked me when I first started, I would say to look toned at the beach for my wife. Now, I am about to be a father this month and just want to be in the best shape to take care of my future son or daughter.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
The Rig! It is my arch nemesis. Whether it’s toes to bars or pull-ups, each time I go near it I get nervous. However, once we are back in the gym and all of this craziness is over, I am going to constantly work on it. I hope this will improve my Murph time too!

February 2020 Athlete of the Month - Assumpta Tucker

In the midst of the global pandemic, I want to share with everyone something inspirational and uplifting. Our fitness community has been incredible and absolutely relentless in giving up on the progress that has been made inside and outside the gym. Now, I would like to spotlight our February Athlete of the Month. Congratulations Assumpta! Its been about a year since you joined the gym and I took you through the one on one elements sessions. When Terry told me he was bringing in a friend to join, I wasn’t sure if he was serious (since he is joking half the time.) After the first elements, I knew you’d be a good fit. You were happy with where you were training and you knew what you wanted. It’s great to see a focuses and driven person come in and acclimate well. I know Assumpta as a hustler outside the gym as well. She works in realty as well as manages Jetty a couple nights a week and bartends. Shes a year or two older than me and is from Ireland. She grew up riding horses and playing gaelic football. That’s not something many of us can relate to. It’s pretty awesome to learn this though and realize how diverse our community is. She’s got a great heart and great sense of humor (always going back and forth with the guys (Terr Bear, Matty Dunne and John Garrity.)
It was not a hard decision to name Assumpta the February Athlete of the Month. However, there have been quite a few members displaying the commitment, work ethic and dedication we look for in this honor.

Q&A
Why you started Crossfit?
I started CrossFit after becoming tired of my same old gym routine. The competitor in me needed more of a challenge. My good friend Terry Sloan spoke highly of CrossFit Island Park. He convinced me it would be a great fit for me.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I have been athletic my entire life. Growing up in Ireland I played on every sports team available to me. Eventually narrowing it down to Gaelic Football(mix of rugby and soccer) cross country and track & field. I have also been an equestrian since I could walk. I competed in any sporting events that allowed my horse!!

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing CrossFit since I became a member a little over a year ago.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
It's impossible to narrow it down to just one, but the environment in general. When you walk in, there is such a positive atmosphere and you can leave all your stresses at the door.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
When i joined the gym I had been struggling with shoulder and neck problems for about 2 years. I had been to orthopedists, chiropractors and everything in between, nothing helped. Dr. Jeremy called me out on it in class one day. I took his advice got treated and followed his programming. I haven't looked back since. I've spent any extra time i have at the gym working on his program. In return I am far stronger than I ever thought possible and feel so much better. Not only physically, but also mentally. Thank you, Dr. Jeremy!

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Definitely achieving something I have been working on. Or seeing my teammates reach their goals. It's a very rewarding feeling.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Red wine.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Do It. Don't second guess it. Just walking through the door is the hardest part. I assure you CrossFit Island Park will exceed all your expectations.

What drives you?
Living a healthy lifestyle drives me. Since joining CrossFit I have became a much stronger and confident person in and out of the gym.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
Strict pull ups are top of the list. Getting better at weightlifting is also my long term goal.In finishing, I am beyond honored to be chosen as athlete of the month. How far I have come since joining the gym is a reflection of Rob's strategic programming and all the coaches dedication to making me a better athlete. Thank you all for pushing me past my limits to reach my goals. Since Rob announced I was athlete of the month, having my 11am teammates and all the other members (some of whom I hadn't yet met), congratulate me, is very rewarding. Thank you all for motivating me, and making going to the gym my favorite part of the day!

Lastly, I want to give my good friend Terry a shout-out. Thank You for convincing me to join, then abandoning me after day one. It forced me to meet new friends and completely outshine you. Love you buddy.

January 2020 Athlete of the Month - Mike Hyland

It has been a long time coming for Mike Hyland to be name Athlete of the Month. Everyone in the gym knows his name. You can usually find his name in one of the top 3 spots on the leaderboard and he’s always looking to put in the necessary work to improve. Mike was actually the very first person I met at CrossFit Island Park. While I was being offered a job to come coach here in late 2015, Mike and I were put together to compete in a partner competition. We didn’t know each other but we were told that we were similar athletes. It turned out to be a good fit because we finished at the top of the podium. Fast forward to 2019 and we competed on a team together at the Asbury Park Games. Hyland is a great teammate and awesome to have in my classes as well. Many times, the higher skilled and more talented athletes tend to stay aware and “do their own thing.” Mike has never been that kind of guy. He loves to be coached and learn how to be even better than he already is. That is the difference between wanting something and being proactive in making sure you get what you want. I’ve always enjoyed the friendly competition with Mike whether it’s class workouts or the Open. We push each other to be better. Hyland is always up for a challenge, and I don’t just mean the high pull challenge (which he pulled the 80# DB easily.) Mike walked in the gym one Saturday a few years ago and I said “Hey Mike. Do you want to do 500 burpees for time?” His answer was an immediate “yeah okay.” I’m not sure I’ll ever do that workout again but I know who I’m asking to join me if I do. And if Mike asks me to do something like that, I probably wouldn’t turn him down.
Mike has made his fitness a top priority in his life and enjoys seeing others around him succeed as well. You’ll never hear him bad mouth anyone and you’ll usually see him finish a workout before everyone and then cheer the rest of the class on as they finish the workout. Thank you Mike for giving your very best to us.

Q&A

Why you started Crossfit?
I was bored with the standard globo gym routine and was enjoying myself in the West End a little too much……. I walked in the doors when it was CrossFit King of the Beach and have been hooked ever since.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I have been an athlete from the time I could stand. Growing up it was soccer, baseball, hockey and lacrosse. High school they cancelled our hockey team after my freshman year, I joined the wrestling team. I went into college intending to wrestle but was asked to join the crew team in my off season and I wound up falling in love with the sport. We would have our first practice around 5:30 am on the East River, then have our second practice at 4pm and row until dark. I’d be rowing and training about 4-5 hours a day during the week and competing every weekend in a regatta. Guess I’ve always loved training and competing with a good group of people.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in May of 2012 back when we were KOB so coming up on 8 years.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The community! I have made so many great friends over the years through this gym. It’s the people next to me that push me to do my best. In addition the top-notch programming and coaching staff.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
Back in 2015/16 when I was training for the Open and potentially Regionals, I wound up irritating my sciatic nerve and could not lift heavy for almost 6 months. It was a major blow to my ego. I was forced to take a step back work with Dr. Jeremy and address my imbalances.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Hard to narrow it down to just one after all these years. Every year though Murph is my favorite event/day. We get to honor Michael Murphy and all those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Then we crush barbecue food and beers.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
It’s not cheating if it fits in your macros right??? I do enjoy ice cream and other sweets.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Give it a shot! Fitness is for everyone at any level. When I first started, I couldn’t even squat below parallel let alone do half the other movements. Given time and consistency training, amazing results are possible.

What drives you?
This community pushes me to be a better version of myself inside and outside of the gym. There’s nothing like catching a sweat and smashing some workouts with good people around.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
I enjoy using my fitness outside of the gym a lot. Whether it be snowboarding, surfing or playing some other sports, so being able to do all those to my maximum potential is my main goal. Currently I am in the weightlifting class and seeking to develop my strength and oly lifts.

December 2019 Athlete of the Month - Greta A.

When asking the staff for their suggestions on the December Athlete of the Month, one name was consistent in every answer, “Greta.” For someone who has only been coming to this gym for a little over six months, Greta has impressed us and is one of the most respectful people I’ve met. Outside the gym, she is a mother of three girls (you may have seen them at the gym), college professor and clinical psychologist. As much as Greta may thank her good friend Angela for introducing her to the gym, I thank Angela even more. It’s such a great reflection of our community when good people enjoy their experiences and want their friends to experience the same. Greta was a college basketball player and played water polo through high school. Needless to say, she’s been an athlete her whole life. So when it came to starting CrossFit, she came with plenty of body awareness, balance and understanding of sport. This made her elements sessions very enjoyable for me. It’s exciting to teach movements to someone who is eager to learn and picks up on things very well. Not to mention, Greta enjoys the process of improving. She is always comes in to class with a big smile no matter how hectic her morning is going and has fun when she’s at the gym. Keep working hard and setting goals. You will get your toes to bar consistent this year for sure!!

Q&A

Why you started Crossfit?
I was looking for something to challenge me and help me get back into shape. Also, my friend Angela Vietmeier inspired me to give it a try.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I’ve played sports my entire life. The list is long but in high school it narrowed down to swimming, basketball and water-polo. I ended up playing basketball in college.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for as long as I have been a member when I joined 6 months ago.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
There are a lot of favorites but I think the atmosphere has to be the top one. I love that the coaches really emphasize each person reaching their own best and recognizing that it looks different for each member. The members are really supportive of each other and it’s nice to be working out as an individual but with a collective mentality.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
Being able to stick to a routine of coming to the gym. Life doesn’t stop happening just because I want to go to the gym.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Climbing the rope and when my toes actually touched the bar.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Hands down salt and vinegar potato chips. Nothing compares.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
As Nike would say, just do it. Give enough time to see the impact though. It is challenging, in a good way and ultimately really rewarding.

What drives you?
I’m innately someone who likes to get it and do it right. I also really like a challenge. I can be a bit of a perfectionist too so I tend to work at it until I’ve got it.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
Double unders and toes to bar. Though my toes touched the bar once, I would really like to turn it into regular thing.

November 2019 Athlete of the Month - Frankie Echevarria

If you have been in a class with Frank Echevarria, you have been encouraged in one way or another. I knew from when I first met Frankie back in June that he would be a vital part of our community. He always walks in with a big smile on his face and is excited to train (no matter what the program is.) This guy is always looking to learn and practice new skills. Coming from an athletic childhood and battling through a challenging weight loss, Frankie found crossfit five years ago and has loved it from the start. He takes full advantage of having his coaches at his disposal. Whether it be asking for help with weightlifting, suggestions for gaining strict gymnastic strength or sharpening his skill in double unders after class, Frankie puts in the work every single day. As a coach, it’s rewarding getting to have a guy like Frankie in class because he is hungry to work, learn and improve at all times. It was awesome to see him battle through the workout “Grace” with the RX weight. He was little unsure how it would go but wanted to give it a shot. With the encouragement of two coaches there, he chipped away and hit all 30 reps as singles and with solid form at that. Thank you for your undying hard work and keep doing your thing Frankie! You bring a level of positivity to the gym that not many can.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
My biggest challenge is learning how to work on my strengths and weaknesses. Trying to make my weaknesses my strength and build on that.

October 2019 Athlete of the Month - John Hopkins

The October honor of Athlete of the Month goes to one hard working, honest, encouraging and selfless member. John Hopkins is an 8:30am regular and has been since the day I met him. He’s a relatively quiet guy, but extremely hard worker. John is a U.S. Veteran (Paratrooper) and is a Chief in the FDNY. He has achieved a lot in his career and share his knowledge, experience and work ethic with his friends and family. I have met his kids (who are around my age) and there is no question that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. A few exceptional attributes I have seen John display is his encouragement in class with his friends as well as his lack of ego. John made the conscious decision a while ago to tone it down and scale back on the amount of weight he lifts. This is for his overall health and it allows him to come to class the next day without feeling beat up. This has rubbed off on some others around him. Although he scales back some lifting, he is continuously improving other areas. John participated in the a running specialty class that we offered and ended up improving his Murph time as a result. His pull-ups keep getting better and for a guy in his 50’s, he had some of the best butterfly pull-ups in the gym. You might get a laugh from his cheat food question below, but John is actively trying to clean up his diet and improve his food choices. Keep up the efforts John and I always look forward to having you in class.

September 2019 Athlete of the Month - Ali O'Mahony

Honoring Ali with Athlete of the Month has been long time coming. Consistent pursuit to become a better athlete, person, husband, wife, brother, friend, etc is what our overall goal is at CrossFit Island Park. We truly believe that through fitness, creating good healthy habits, keeping those habits and sharing our positive results, we can slowly change the current norm. Ali is a prime example of what we look for in our ideal member. Not only has she developed as an athlete and continuously looks to improve, but she does it with the best of intentions and for the right reasons. Humility and gratitude are two big attributes she possesses and I appreciate that. There are a few things Ali talks about in the paragraph below as well as the Q&A and I think we all can relate to at least one of them. She came to this gym with prior injuries. She has been smart and took the slower path to correct these and/or strength areas of weakness so that she can keep doing what she enjoys. Next, Ali was a college soccer player. A number of our members played sports competitively growing up. You may not know it unless you talk to others about it. These former high school and college athletes will always have that competitive nature and drive to succeed. The third thing is what motivates Ali.
Her friends, family and husband are her key motivators. That is awesome! Her husband Bobby lives with a very serious genetic disorder that makes breathing difficult. Her attitude with her own health and support to improve her husband’s is something special. We don’t see care as often as we should. Unhealthy habits have become the norm for society. Let’s be more like Ali and be conscious of the health of our loved ones.

”First, I just want to say that I am honored to be athlete of the month. I never thought I could make it this far with all of the hip and knee injuries in the past and I am truly excited and look forward to seeing how far I can go. There are so many tremendous athletes that attend this gym and I believe that is a reflection of the coaches. Second, Crossfit Island Park is more than just a gym for me. It is my safe place when I have a bad day, it is the highlight of my day, and I can be myself and push my limits there. I attribute this mainly to the coaches and people because they are always cheering you on and always have your back.  Lastly, this place has transformed me as a person both physically and mentally. Between going to Acupuncture with Nikki and getting treated by Jeremy, I have a better understanding of my overall well being and now know how to keep myself mentally and physically healthy. Special shout out to Jeremy for helping me in my pursuit to join the NYPD force.”

Q&A

Why you started Crossfit?
It is a difficult thing when you reach the end of your college sports career and realize you have a ton of free time and no team to be a part of. College sports take up every minute of your spare time, so when my soccer career ended, I knew I had to find something to replace it that would also fill my competitive void and need for being part of a team. I have tried regular gyms, they never did it for me, I have even tried other Crossfit gyms and they never seemed to fit either.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
Growing up I played a few sports including soccer, swimming, basketball, and softball. After a while soccer became my sport of choice and I ended up playing all throughout college. I am innately competitive and I love being part of a team.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been a member at CrossFit Island Park since September 2017 and I have been doing CrossFit since 2014.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The people and coaches. From the start, I felt comfortable with the coaches because I could tell they had my best interest at heart and not everything was about ‘going heavier’. As for the people, the friends I have made at this gym are genuine caring people who motivate me every day and they are part of the reason I look forward to coming to class every day. I also have to mention that I was very excited when the 7pm fitness classes were added every day.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
The biggest challenge I have overcome since joining the gym was my joint pain. Soccer left me with some injuries (hip and ACL surgeries – typical soccer injuries) which in turn left me a bit fearful of working out. Before joining Crossfit Island Park, I made sure to always go light on weights because I knew I would end up hurting my back, hip, etc. I actually began going to see Jeremy before even joining the gym. After working a few months with Jeremy, I realized the exercises he gave me were also incorporated into the CrossFit workouts. This immediately sold me on joining. Since then, with the help of Jeremy and Nikki (for acupuncture), I have been able to keep my pain in check, I have overcome my fear of getting hurt and have actually increased my strength more in the last 2 years than ever before. I have never felt better in my life.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
The moment that sticks out most for me is when I first achieved double unders. We were practicing them before our workout and all of the sudden I realized I was stringing them together and I could not believe it. I was so excited and then realized I then had to do them for the WOD (that was a tough one).

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Bagels, pasta and pizza. I wouldn't necessarily call these my cheat foods but more like my favorite foods; all in moderation.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Just do it, you will not regret it. It may seem overwhelming at first, but the people and coaches make you feel comfortable immediately.

What drives you?
My family and friends. Some of you may already know this, but my husband has Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that damages the lungs and makes it hard to breathe. Every time I get out there, I remind myself of how lucky I am to be able to breathe and workout and I never take that for granted. I also believe working out is key to keeping the mind and body healthy.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
My goal every time I workout is to get even just a little bit better, whether it be running a second faster on a mile or adding 5 lbs to my step ups, it all pays off in the end.
As for a specific goal, I would love to try and overcome my fear of being upside down so that I could do handstand pushups.

August 2019 Athlete of the Month - Kristina Kullak

Without further ado, our August Athlete of the Month is Kristina Kullak. She takes over the reigns of Miss August from her good friend Jo Cecil. Seeing Kristina put in the work at the gym over the last few months has been great to watch firsthand. She is a 6am regular and if you have seen her at 7am open gym, an “engine wod” machine. It was clear a few months ago that she identified some habits she had and was looking to make some changes for the better. Kristina decided to sign up for Dr. Jeremy’s Saturday morning specialty class to learn more about how she can perform in the gym. Along with this, they had weekly check-ins to help hold Kristina accountable with being more conscious of her diet. Having to wake up for a 6:45am class will definitely make anyone second guess their plans for Friday night, even when it’s convenient to enjoy the perks of the west end. That class will be back after the Open.
It was interesting for me to learn that Kristina had initially been intimidated by CrossFit because of how I view her now. I sometimes forget that the name “CrossFit” still carries a dangerous aspect in the minds of outsiders. Knowing Kristina, her husband John and many other members who make up our great community, I forget how much more we as a gym know about how our bodies move, perform, adapt and evolve than most people. Our training methods are constantly evolving and are always hungry for a new challenge. I love seeing Kris come in to challenge herself with movements you wouldn’t think someone of her size would voluntarily choose to do at open gym. On more than a few occasions, I've seen her on the bike, rower or hitting sets of wall balls. Spending that extra time to work on weaknesses is something that catches my eye and solidifies my choice in Athlete of the Month. Keep up the hard work Kristina!
Also, I have asked for thoughts multiple times on apparel design from Kris because she does that for a living. A few summers ago, we used two of her designs. I also have one that we have yet to print, so look out for more of her input.

Q&A

Why you started Crossfit?
When we moved to Long Beach in 2012, my husband (John) joined KOB immediately. He got me to try one class with him and I’m pretty sure the WOD was “Karen” . Needless to say, I could barely walk for 2 weeks after and I swore I wasn’t going back EVER. I felt like I wasn’t in good enough shape to be there and would just embarrass myself. Thankfully, my super friendly (and pushy!) next-door neighbor, Jo Cecil, talked me into giving it another try. She had been a member of KOB for a year and explained people of all levels of fitness were there and that I had nothing to fear. Finally, in the Spring of 2013, I joined CrossFit Island Park and haven’t looked back since.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
Not much to report here . I played soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey, but never excelled in any of them. I enjoy running and have done a few half marathons and small scale races, but that’s really it!

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I’ve been a member for 6 years

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The variety of workouts is my favorite thing about the gym . Prior to Crossfit, my workout regiment revolved around getting a treadmill during peak hours at a regular gym. If I was lucky enough to fight someone off a machine, I would then be in cardio purgatory staring at the clock. Now, I walk into class with a new routine and different set of challenges each day. It keeps me engaged and makes class fly by. I used to view working out as a chore and something on my daily check list, but now it’s become an integral part of my life and favorite part of the day.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
I think my initial reservation of walking through the doors of a CrossFit gym was my biggest challenge that I quickly overcame. When I come to class, I walk into a room full of the friendliest and most supportive people you could ever meet, and coaches who are motivated and eager to teach you. There is absolutely no reason to hesitate!

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
It is hard to pin point a single moment that stands out. For me, my favorite moments are a collection of cheers during a workout, a friendly push when you feel like quitting, and the exchange of sweaty high fives when it's all over.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
A White slice from West End Pizza OR Swingbellys

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
I would tell them not be to intimidated by the stigma CrossFit has. Come in with an open mind and give it your best. You’ll probably be surprised how many strangers are instantly at your side cheering you on.

What drives you?
I want to maintain a healthy lifestyle that I can keep up with indefinitely. I think many of us are guilty of putting our personal health on the back burner for one reason or another. I want to keep up with the workouts and have a better grasp of proper nutrition so I can be the best version of myself. Besides the killer programming Rob dishes on the daily, Dr. Jeremy has given me other tips on how to improve some of my deficiencies. I have the tools for success, I just need to continue to put in the work and hold myself accountable.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
My goal is to crush every benchmark workout and get a better score than the last time. I am only in competition with myself, so improving is proof that I am getting better and stronger. Beating John on a more regular basis wouldn't suck either ;)

July 2019 Athlete of the Month - Marc Caine

What can I say about Marc Caine that you won’t get from reading his Q&A? For starters, Marc is one of the most dedicated members I have ever (yes ever) come to know. He’s a smart guy with numbers working for the IRS. You wouldn’t know that unless you got to talking with him about work. I bet you didn’t know he shows up about 20 minutes early to class multiple days a week to run a mile before the 5:30am class. Something I learned about Marc is that he “was” fearful of movements in the past. Now, you would never know as he is eager to get better at every single aspect of training in the gym. From pull-ups and rope climbs to cleaning up technique with olympic lifts, Marc makes sure he take the necessary time to improve. Being that I have coached him multiple mornings per week for that last 3 years, It has been awesome to watch him lift. Marc is a powerful athlete and can squat and deadlift some heavy weight. The cool thing is that Marc is in his 40s and is still getting stronger. This goes to show that building strength is not only for 20 year olds and it does in fact take time as well as dedication. My favorite answer in Marc’s Q&A is for the question asking what would he tell someone thinking of starting CrossFit. Go read that answer. Marc just gets it! He understands the intent each day and sees the overall vision of what we strive to do at CrossFit Island Park each day. I know this is something he truly believes because he has broke friends in to join. He was up front and honest about if he thought it would stick. Two plus years later, Brad is a 5:30am regular. So thank you Marc for your endless hard work and trust you put in us. It's always a pleasure to have you in class and don’t worry, the Open is around the corner so you’ll get that game day feeling soon.

Q&A
Why you started Crossfit?
I started CrossFit because I was totally bored at the "regular" gym.  I would do the standard workout of chest day, bi-tri day, leg day, running and swimming.  The day I saw some guy working out (I use this term loosely) in jeans and button down shirt I knew I needed a change.   I also missed the feel of competition. I was not the best athlete growing up but I always played a sport and loved "game day."  The competition wods and especially wods during the in-house open provide me that rush of a game day.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
Growing up I played hockey, baseball and basketball.  In high school I was on the swim team (I am surprisingly fast for a larger person). And in college I decided to lose the speed-o (not a pretty sight) and tried out for the Rugby club - which I played for all four years.

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started CrossFit over 5 years ago at Oside and came to Island Park the day after Oside closed.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
There are actually two favorites for me.  First and most obvious are the people. Knowing there are 200 plus members here that all share a common passion is an amazing feeling.  And Especially the 530/6 am crew who all get up before the sun to start the day sweating. Second is the challenge each day presents. There is never a day I walk into the gym (or at 5 am it is a slow waddle) and feel bored or that the wod is pointless.  The programming is on-point. The fact that our workouts are well planned and tested weeks in advance shows that Rob cares about our progress and what we are doing each day has a purpose. Other places have WODs that were created by the coach on the way into the gym that morning.  Not here.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
The feeling of "I cannot/will not do that".  Now I feel that I can try anything. And if there is a movement I cannot do I don't feel embarrassed or ashamed. Rather I feel just as accomplished with the scaled or modified  version of the movement. And I have definitely taken that confidence with me for use outside of the gym.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Squat cleans.  (I assume everyone would have guessed deadlifts or back squats).

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Anything not called salad.  But honestly nothing beats a bowl of ice cream with rainbow sprinkles.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Go inside and try one workout then make your decision.  Most people my age are scared of the word "CrossFit". I try to explain that CrossFit doesn't mean squatting 400 pounds or flipping tires every day.  At CrossFit there is no judgment and there are professional coaches that will help customize any of the workouts. Also, you will acquire new skills and inspirations that will make you a better, more well-rounded person.

What drives you?
My 3 kids and being alive and well to see them all become adults with their own families.  My wife and I both do everything possible to make certain our kids have the best life possible.  We want to make certain our kids understand that they need work / life balance and that fitness has to be part of it.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
I would love to lose weight, which is a struggle for me.  Some of the early am people are planning a weight-loss competition for after the summer (we are waiting since some people who shall go nameless don't want to give up beer and BBQ until September.

June 2019 Athlete of the Month - Jeannie Schloen

Our June Athlete of the Month has been a long time coming. Jeannie has been on the list of potential honorees a few times but each time it was time she decide on the athlete, Jeannie was sick for a couple weeks. Jeannie has been very consistent in the gym and is coming off a week full of PRs. She bested her clean, bench press and deadlift all this week. That is one hell of a week. Although hitting heavier lifts of late, Jeannie is definitely known had being one of our faster runners in the gym. She was a cross-country and track runner in high school. Her favorites were 400s and 800s. There’s no surprise she excels in our running workouts. Everyday Jeannie comes to class, she is 100% focused and looking to improve. Her first class nearly 3 and a half years ago, Jeannie climbed rope. That takes most new members a while to grasp. From day one, our coaches were excited to coach Jeannie. Thank you for trusting in our program and coaches. Keep showing up and putting in the work. It continues to pay off.

Q&A
Why you started Crossfit?
I started CrossFit because I was looking to get back into a workout routine after a long hiatus.  I hadn't worked out consistently since my high school cross country and track years.  My husband introduced me to CrossFit.  He used to be a member of a gym in Babylon.  He began accumulating his own equipment and built a personal gym in his wood shop.  So my first few CrossFit WODs were in my husband's wood shop.  It quickly became clear that in order to progress, I needed some real coaching.  So I decided to join CIP - a decision that has changed my life!

How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been doing CrossFit since February 2016 when I joined CIP.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
It's a three way tie between the community, the programming, and the coaching.  The supportive community is what pushes me to keep moving even when I feel like giving up.  It fulfills that void that I felt after high school when I was no longer part of a team.  The programming is second to none.  The fact that Rob programs things like strength cycles and wall ball mentality tests as well as writing an intent for every single workout makes our gym far superior to most.  And then there's the coaching.  I put 100% trust in all of our coaches knowing the knowledge and experience that they bring to the table.  It's the combination of the community, the programming, and the coaching that has helped me get to the point that I'm at today.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
When I joined the gym, I had been battling a bad case IT band syndrome which kept me from running for several years.  I'm assuming that all of the strength training involved in CrossFit fixed whatever imbalances I had that were causing my IT band syndrome because when running was programmed into workouts that first summer after I joined, much to my surprise, I was running pain free again for the first time in years!

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
Honestly, every day that I come into the gym is my favorite.  It's the one hour a day where I can block out all of life's stressors and just get totally lost in what I'm doing.  It's almost meditative for me.  But if I had to choose, I would say the Open is my favorite time of year in the gym because the energy is incredible.  I remember watching Chris get his first bar muscle up during an Open workout a few years back.  The entire gym was cheering for him.  It was a pretty incredible moment.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Ice cream.  A pint of Ben & Jerry's stands no chance against me.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
What are you waiting for?  You've got nothing to lose and absolutely everything to gain.  Most people, I find, are scared that they aren't going to be able to do all of the movements.  They feel like they need to get into better shape before starting CrossFit.  To those people, I say, I'm 3 1/2 years in and I still can't do all of the movements!  Everything can be scaled to the level that you're currently at and as you get stronger and you improve on certain skills, you find yourself doing things that you never thought you'd be able to do!

What drives you?
Being the best version of myself is what drives me in and out of the gym.  I love that progress can so easily be tracked in CrossFit.  Shaving seconds off my mile time, getting movements that I previously was unable to do, and hitting new PRs keeps me coming back for more day after day and year after year.

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
I have a few - getting better at double unders so that I don't look like I've just been in an S&M video every time they're programmed and improving upper body strength (push ups, hand stand push ups, strict press, etc.) are big ones.  I'd also love to get my first muscle up!

May 2019 Athlete of the Month - Joni Gibaldi

2019-3-23-01688-XL.jpg

Our May Athlete of the Month is very well known in our community. She is one of the most welcoming and encouraging members your will meet. If you see her regularly at 6am class, you may hear her say “good morning doll,” “how are ya gorgeous?” when she walks in the gym or “thanks, have a great day” on her way out. Thank you Joni Gibaldi for being our May Athlete of the Month.
Joni was the first member to reach out to me when I came to this community in January 2016. We had previously at a few competitions where I competed against her daughter and now son-in-law. Joni sent me an email or facebook message welcoming me and letting me know how excited she was to have me as a coach. That was awesome. Joni has come a long way since I came to Island Park over three years ago. She has become more aware and proactive of her health in and outside the gym as well as a very consistent member. In turn, her performance in the gym has improved drastically. After Joni got hurt during the 2018 Crossfit Open, Dr. Jeremy and I have had numerous conversations how to keep her in class and motivated. Regular visits to Dr. J and rest were a big part. From there, Joni stuck to her plan to get better. It’s awesome to see improvement first hand. I remember Joni struggling to squat even near parallel and not quite make it there. Now, I watch her crush front and back squats at full depth. Joni is taking advantage of all the opportunities to improve herself and she’s enjoys every bit of it. She has lost a noticeable amount of weight over the last couple months. Keep up your hard work doll! It’s always a pleasure to have you in class.

Q&A
Why you started Crossfit?
I started CrossFIt because I was looking for a new workout after total knee replacement and my daughter had started and I went and did a workout with her and was immediately hooked.

What’s your background? (Athletic)
I was a swimmer when I was little. Due to an accident at 10 I didn’t do anything athletic until my 30s I obtained a blackbelt in kenpo karate.

April 2019 Athlete of the Month - Stu Phillips

Our April Athlete of the Month is a guy who has been on my radar for this honor for a few months. He is a gentleman in every essence of the word. Stu Phillips has been a member here since August of 2016 and has been a regular at the 530/6am classes. He started doing crossfit because he wanted to “break the boring routine of regular gym." I and many others can relate to this. That’s why I decided to join a crossfit too. Being a collegiate middle/Long distance track & field and cross country athlete, Stu came with his comfortable skill set. If you watch Stu run, it looks effortless. This is because he trained for years. Stu is one of a couple members who have run a sub 5 minute mile. That’s impressive!
Stu is an incredible teammate and friend. This is what stood out the most when selecting him for this month’s honor. During the Open, Stu was one of the first athletes to arrive each Saturday and stayed for most of the morning judging and cheering others on during the workouts. He came in Sunday mornings even if he wasn’t working out so that his workout buddies had a judge and someone there to support them when they took on the Open workout. He is a guy who stays in touch. If he doesn’t see someone at the gym for a few days, he’s asking where he or she is or has already reached out to them.
Aside from coming to gym daily, one of Stu’s favorite things to do is race cars. Unfortunately, his close friend and racing teammate Mike Patterson is no longer with us. I know as race season approaches that Stu will be paying tribute to his buddy on the track. I am proud to call Stu a friend and I am grateful that Dr. Jeremy and I are able to provide a place where we all can better ourselves. It takes a great deal of positivity and a firm support system to succeed. Stu is an essential part to this community. Keep up the hard work Stu!

Q&A
How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I joined Crossfit Island Park about 2 and half years ago, and have been doing crossfit for a total of 3 years.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The community!!!  You have people with all different types of abilities, strengths, and professions coming together to throw down with an honest hour of real work.  Especially with the 5:30/6am crew!!!  Best way to start the day in my opinion.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
Haven't quite got it down yet, but I would  have to say trying to get rid of the "stripper butt" on my olympic lifts.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
There have been so many, but I would have to say the most recent is a bittersweet one.  It was with the unfortunate passing of my childhood friend and member of our gym Michael Patterson's wake.  So many athletes from our gym came to show their respects to his family that day.  It really just spoke volumes on how special our community is.  The support reaches far beyond the 4 walls of our gym.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Pepperoni pizza

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
DO IT!!!!  My only regret was not starting this sooner.  Especially here a CrossFit Island Park.  Between the supportive, knowledgeable coaching staff, to the hard working athletes, there is no better place to better yourself.

What drives you?
Knowing that there is always area for improvement.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
Keep improving both my diet and my squats!!

March 2019 Athlete of the Month - Val Emerson

Congratulations Val!! This was a decision that you made easy. It has been incredibly clear a much you have improved as an athlete in your technique and understanding of the movements as well as your understanding of the intent, stimulus learn your own pace. Some people don’t ever connect the dots on the last few that I mentioned. Val started CrossFit back when this gym was in Long Beach. She was looking to try something new and was looking to be challenged on a daily basis. Did she pick the right style of training or what? From the newbie to the games athletes, we are all challenged on a daily basis. Val is a regular in the 8:30am class. She occasionally comes in for the 6am class or 7am open gym because getting in the gym and working hard has become a part of who she is. This is a great habit she shares with her husband Matt (6am regular) and something I hope her kids learn from. The work ethic and dedication does not go unnoticed. Val, you have progressed a lot since I began coaching you in 2016. From constantly asking “What’s a thruster?” even if it wasn’t in the program for the day, to recently having a conversation with me about your pace on the rower and counting your pulls per 500m or per 1000m. It’s a pleasure to coach you and it’s awesome to be a part of your fitness journey. Keep up the energy and continue to work for your goals. I’ll be there to help you along the way.

February 2019 Athlete of the Month - Harrison Hefele

Congratulations Mr. February, Harrison Hefele! It is our honor to name you Athlete of the Month. Harrison joined the gym over a year ago. Coach Amanda (then a member) brought him to do “Murph” prior to that and his interest started. As a former college basketball player and high school lacrosse athlete, Harrison has a competitive edge ingrained in him. He is always looking to improve and loves to learn something new each class he takes. Many of you may know that Harrison is still recovering from a torn ACL while playing basketball. This isn’t his first knee injury and he also isn’t allowing it to stop him from doing what he wants. After multiple conversations with him, I learned how much Harrison loves coming to the gym. He said, “I am in the best all around shape I’ve ever been in.” This of course is different from being in shape for basketball as he would need to be on the court practically every day to be at his best for basketball. It’s pretty cool to have a former athlete like Harrison enjoy the challenge of movements outside his comfort zone (gymnastics.) He’s extra motivated for these since Amanda is a former gymnast and excels as these movements. He’s been a dark horse on the whiteboard as well. Not many saw him posting a top 3 500m Ski time back in January. Being a tall guy, he didn’t realize he was using a 12ft target for wall balls until he was asked why he was using it. That sure made the 10ft target easier. Lastly, a key contribution Harrison has provided has been an app that I use with the coaches and the weightlifting program. It’s called SportsYou. It’s a social media platform made for teams. Keep up the hard work and continue being yourself! Harrison, it’s a pleasure having you in the gym each day and congratulations on being Mr. February.

Q&A
How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started Crossfit at Island Park in November of 2017.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
The Island Park Gym has built a culture and relationship with their members that reminds me of playing a team sport again. The positivity, advice, encouragement throughout the gym makes it a unique place to be apart of.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
I'm currently going through a knee injury that I've had twice before. In the past I dreaded these recoveries because it just involved annoying and uncomfortable physical therapy sessions. The coaches have helped my knee get stronger in a shorter period of time. Overall the gym has helped me overcome the physical challenges as well as the mental challenges that come with it.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
The Friday Night Breast Cancer Awareness workout that the gym held. It was awesome to see an overwhelming amount of support.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Anything deep friend and smothered in cheese.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Go for it. Don't be afraid to expand your comfort zone and try something different. Crossfit has helped me stay in better shape while avoiding injuries that I typically get from playing other sports. The people there are great and only want what's best for you.

What drives you?
The knee injuries motivate me to become a better athlete. The injuries also gave me the unique perspective to appreciate every day that I can be active.
Oh and seeing the look on Amanda's face when I beat her in something involving gymnastics :D

What is your biggest fitness goal right now?
To stay consistent. I would like to be physically fit and active for most of my life. It isn't realistic for me to play basketball much longer but the gym has shown me that age doesn't make a difference.  I can't thank the coaches and members at Island Park enough for the constant support and positivity that they exude on a daily basis.

January 2019 Athlete of the Month - Mike Patterson

January’s honor without question goes to Mike Patterson. This guy has been on the list of candidates for months. It is only fitting that we honor him and celebrate him with Athlete of the Month.

On January 24th, I got a phone call at five in the evening giving me the sad news that Mike Patterson passed away suddenly. I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I was in disbelief and heartbroken for a member whom I really did not know outside our four walls. He had a quiet demeanor and possessed more short term power on the ski, bike and row than we could dream of. His nicknames to his buddies outside the gym were “Sugar” and “Patty.” To us, he was “Big Mike.” Outside the gym, he and managed his family’s bakery in Brooklyn, he raced is 1988 BMW M3 and was a loving son, brother, fiance and friend. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike’s mother and fiance Sharon and they were incredibly grateful for the attendance our members showed to say our final goodbyes to Mike. (The 5:30am crew was there before anyone else.)

A few words come to mind when I think of Mike:
1) Yankees
He always had a Yankees fitted hat on. That was his trademark.

2) Respectful
Mike was soft spoken. He walked the walk and always did the right thing.

3) Selfless
He put others first and always offered help.
Like Stu said in the obituary, “If Michael had it, it was yours.”
The the Mike picked up his brand new Ford Raptor truck, I walked in the gym and asked if it was his truck in the parking lot. He went to toss me the keys and said, “Yeah, do you want drive it?”

There are many memories of Mike and a lot of you shared them in the book I gave to Sharon.
Big Mike had all the characteristics in an Athlete of the Month at CrossFit Island Park.
I wish he was here to enjoy it with us.

Rest easy “Big Mike”

December 2018 Athlete of the Month - Stephanie Salmon

Why you started Crossfit?

Congratulations and thank you to Steph for allowing us to honor her as our final Athlete of the Month for the year 2018. She was one of very few individuals who constantly stood out over the last few months when checking off all the boxes when selecting a new Athlete of the Month. I was Steph’s first coach at the gym and remember her one on one elements vividly. I had a couple individuals in elements with me that week and it was a breathe of fresh air to get Steph. Some people come in a they pick up on things quickly. Of course she didn’t feel as comfortable and smooth with the barbell at first as she looked. But, for a first-timer, it was excellent. She is teachable, responsive, interested and hard working. Steph decided to start Crossfit because she was looking for something new, like many others. She grew up playing sports including Volleyball, Soccer and Track. She continued to run through college and does so now as well. She is an impressive runner. Look out gentlemen when there are 400m and 800m sprints. The girl who just passed you is probably Steph. I’m super impressive with how willing Steph has been to challenge herself on the strength aspects of her training. It’s pretty common that runners who come in tend to avoid lifting because they believe it will immediately make them “big.” This false understanding by many stunt their progress. Steph’s progress has been incredible and she is a pleasure to have in class. She is always looking to improve and work on a new skill. I can wait to see her ripping through kipping pull-ups soon. I know that’s a goal of hers and I’ve seen her knock out a bunch of strict pull-ups. Time to put the pieces together and achieve another goal!
Once again, Congratulations Steph!

Q&A
How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started Crossfit for the first time and have been a member at Island Park for roughly 6 months.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
My favorite thing about the gym is the community. Even though I've started recently, everyone has been so welcoming and encouraging and I think thats why I've made the most progress. The guidance from Coaches and encouragement from members push you and challenge you to do better in each workout. I look forward to going to the gym everyday and am motivated by the potential for improvement.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
It may sound weird but the biggest challenge which I am still working on is overcoming barbell/weightlifting movements. Now I know that is most of Crossfit, but I remember telling Rob how unnatural the barbell movements felt when I started the elements class. I've always loved fitness, running and going to the gym but never performed weightlifting in this way. I was so used to bodyweight exercises or lower weight and a million reps but I see so much more progress with these types of workouts. I have become significantly more comfortable with the barbell but still have a lot to work on. For example,I am not very good friends with snatches and overhead squats they are still pretty intimidating for me.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
That's a tough one but looking at everything as a whole I think progress is my favorite. My body feels so much stronger from when I started 6 months ago and I've noticed these small improvements which I never really felt before I joined Crossfit. Specifically, I was pretty excited when I did a handstand push up for the first time. Also progress of others. That PR board is pretty full at the end of each month which is really encouraging to see

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
Oh Boy. I love chocolate ice cream. Also love cookie dough. Also love pizza.. and bagels. But I try to be good haha

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Do it! I actually considered doing Crossfit about three years ago but was discouraged by others who thought Crossfit wasn't good for you so I never started. For 3 years I went back and forth about joining and never did until this past summer. Don't listen to what everyone else has to say, go for it!

What drives you?
What drives me the most is that there is always room for improvement.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
My biggest fitness goal right now is kipping pull ups. I am hoping to get those down in the next couple of months after working on our strict strength.

November 2018 Athlete of the Month - Carolyn Castell

Sometimes its tough narrowing down our selection for Athlete of the Month. Not this time!
When I started giving my thoughts of Carolyn as November to other coaches, the instant excitement and agreement made me quickly realize I had the right person. Carolyn is a wife, mother of 3 and hard working 8:30am regular. She joined CrossFit Island Park 4 years ago when she was looking for something different than running. She was getting bored and needed something new. That is more of less the reason I started crossfit as well. I was running a lot and lost interest. Carolyn has improved tremendously and it has been noticed by every coach she has. In the last couple months, I’ve been told some positive stories by other coaches and made comments to them about how much better, stronger and toned Carolyn has gotten. I was excited to hear how she kept a positive attitude and encouraged her team to keep working hard during a team ski & bike workout this past month. I’ve also commented to Coach Anita and Coach Cleary how good Carolyn’s kip was while she was doing toes to bar one morning. While reading her Q&A, it’s great to see how important setting a good example for her children is. It may seem so simple or obvious for some, but it is a tough task in today’s world. I appreciate you daily efforts in the gym and I am confident you are leading by example outside the gym as well. Congratulations on November’s honor and thank you!

Q&A
How long have you been a member and how long have you been doing CrossFit?
I have been a member and a crossfitter for four years.

What is your favorite thing about the gym?
It would definitely be the people and the friendships I’ve formed over the last few years.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome since joining the gym?
For me the biggest challenge  is not making excuses for myself, which is so easy to do.  I have to remind myself that putting in the hard work is what is going to help me achieve my goals.

What is your favorite moment at the gym so far?
I can’t quite pinpoint just one because there are many.  It’s watching your friends hit their goals you know they’ve worked hard to achieve, it’s the cheering another member on during a tough workout, it’s working out for a good cause and sometimes it’s just the silliness that happens during a class.

What's your favorite "cheat" food?
This was probably the hardest question for me because there are many.  I’m going to go with pizza.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about starting?
Go for it! You’ll never regret trying to improve yourself.

What drives you?
My children.  I always want to set a good example for them.  I find them copying some of the things we do at the gym, at home because they want to workout like I do.  They also see how happy it makes me.

What is you biggest fitness goal right now?
For me it’s having enough energy to keep up with my children.  They’re always on the move so I have to be too.

October 2018 Athlete of the Month - Matt Amato

As October flew by, I didn’t have an athlete of the month ready to announce. I had a couple names that stood out but I wanted to hear who the other coaches and staff members felt was most deserving. This is no lie. Every single one of them had Matt on their list. So that was a decision the team made and we could not be more proud of Matt’s efforts and achievements.
Congratulations Matt! You are the youngest member to be Athlete of the Month.
Matt is almost 17 and started crossfit a few years ago to get in shape for wrestling season. I later learned that he was a track & field athlete as well. I am jealous that you started doing CrossFit in high school. There are numerous members who are in the same boat as me wishing we had this structured training at the high school age. Enjoy it and continue to take full advantage of it, Matt.
Other than being a two sport athlete, Matt refs soccer games as well. He is always a pleasure to have in class. The kid workouts his ass off every time he comes to the gym and trusts his coaches. There is no hesitation to ask how much weight he should lift for a workout. He knows we have his best interest in mind and we are here to help him succeed. By the way, Matt can back squat almost 300lbs. I’m sure he will hit it next time he tests the lift. He’s got some raw strength.
Make sure you congratulate him when you see him in class. At the end of this month he be taking time off from the gym until the summer July because of wrestling and track & field seasons.
Keep working hard Matt!
